EDMONTON — The Alberta government has raked in over $11 million dollars over the last year from the cars, cash and real estate it has seized from people linked to crime.

Attorney General, Alison Redford, says legislation passed in 2008 which allows the government to seize such property is doing what it was supposed to do.

She says if a person uses their home or car to make or sell drugs, they could lose it all under provisions of the Victims Restitution and Compensation Payment Act.

The money raised goes to pay back victims of crime, or fund victim support agencies.

Provincial officials say they have paid at least $328,000 to victims of crime and seized 59 vehicles that were used in so-called “dial-a-dope” operations.

They’re also in the process of returning about $54,000 dollars to victims of a fraudulent Internet vehicle sale.
