Hog producer Will Kingma of Bentley has been chosen to replace former chairman Herman Simons of Tees on Alberta Pork’s board of directors.

Owner of Kingdom Farms, Kingma was elected during meeting of producers from Alberta Pork’s Region 2 in Red Deer on Tuesday. Region 2 covers the west central area of the province.

Simons, who had been serving his third term as chairman, resigned suddenly late in February, citing personal reasons.

His seat at the helm was taken over by vice-chairman Jim Haggins, who lives in Calgary and operates a hog farm northeast of the city, near Linden.

This will be the second time Kingma has stepped in mid-term. Last year, he was appointed to replace director-at-large Don Erno.

Kingma ran against fellow producers Erik Meinders and Keith Rasmuson.

Asked afterward what he brings to the table, Kingma said that he would like to help producers look for alternate means of increasing their income.

That includes looking at alternate sources of revenue such as the energy and wastewater management strategies he is testing in his farm.

With help from the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, Kingma is testing methods extracts water from manure for use in ethanola production, which he believes will save producers up to $20 per pig.

Kingma’s appointment still needs approval of the Alberta Agricultural Products Marketing Council, the Crown corporation that supervises operation of agricultural boards and commissions within the province, said Haggins.

Marketing Council must approve the appointment because it has no mechanism for byelections when elected representatives leave during their terms, he said.
