Forest industry improving
Alberta’s forestry industry continues to show signs of improvement, with product shipments in the fourth quarter of 2009 up more than six per cent from the preceding three-month period.
However, the overall value of forest products from the province during the final quarter of the year was still 25 per cent lower than for the corresponding period in 2008.
The Alberta Forest Products Association said the year-over-year value of products from the lumber and secondary manufacturing sector fell nearly 10 per cent, with the figure for panelboard down 33 per cent and for pulp and paper 29 per cent lower.
“Our industry continues to feel the effects of the global economic downturn, but there is hope on the horizon,” said AFPA president and CEO Brady Whittaker in a news release.
“Shrinking losses and modest quarterly improvements suggest that economic conditions are slowly improving and that is welcome news for Alberta’s forest products producers.”
The Alberta Forest Products Association represents lumber, panelboard, pulp and paper, and secondary manufacturing wood products companies that operate in Alberta.
