Agriculture conference set for May
Members of the Alberta Agricultural Economics Association will return to Red Deer next month for their 27th annual conference.
Visions 2010 will take place May 6 and 7 at the Red Deer Lodge, with this year’s theme Alberta’s Agri-Food Future: Livestock, Land Use and Leadership.
Sessions will focus on land use and leadership, the future of the meat sector, and trade, standards and food safety, among other topics.
Presenting will be faculty members from the University of Alberta, the University of Guelph, Oregon State University, Iowa State University and the University of California, Berkeley, as well as government officials from Alberta, Canada and the United States, and representatives of industry associations and private companies.
The keynote speaker at a Thursday evening banquet will be Gordon Cove, president and CEO of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency.
Cost to attend the conference is $200 for registrations received by April 30 and $240 for those processed thereafter. Reduced rates are available for students and single-day registrants.

The Alberta Agricultural Economics Association represents academics, students, producers, professional agrologists and others with an interest in agriculture. Its conference, which is held every year in Red Deer, is organized through the University of Alberta’s department of rural economy.
Many trade shows have been planned for Central Alberta
Trade show season is at hand, with a pair of Central Alberta events marking milestone years.
The 30th annual Stettler Trade Show will take place this weekend, with more than 100 exhibitors showcasing products and services at the Stettler Recreation Center. Hours are 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The 30th annual Lacombe and District Trade Show will follow on April 17 and 18. Set for the town’s curling rink, it will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, with a pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. on the second day.
The Innisfail and District Trade Show is scheduled for April 16 and 17 at the Innisfail Twin Arenas. That event will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Further north, the Ponoka & District Chamber of Commerce Trade Fair will take place April 23 and 24 at the Ponoka Arena Complex. Hours will be 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Finally, the Rocky Mountain House Chamber Trade Show will run from April 31 to May 2 at the Twin Arena Complex.
Local CHBA announces award finalists
The Canadian Home Builders’ Association, Central Alberta branch, has announced the finalists for its 2010 Awards of Excellence in Housing — Member’s Choice.
In the running for Service Professional of the Year are ATCO Gas, the City of Red Deer Inspections and Licensing Department, Alberta New Home Warranty Program, and Howard & Company.
Finalists for Supplier of the Year are Windsor Plywood, Fargey’s Paint & Wallcoverings, Totem Building Supplies and Red Deer Lighting.
Trade of the Year will be one of the following: Gilmar Construction Ltd., Henry’s Eavestroughing Ltd., Red Deer Overdoor or Goodmen Roofing.
The local branch of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association previously announced the finalists for its Awards of Excellence in Housing in the single- and multi-family home, renovation project and green building categories, as well as for its small- and large-volume Builder of the Year.
Winners will be named at the organization’s awards gala on April 17.
Women to be featured
Women of the Farm and Cows and Creeks and Now Communities Too will share the spotlight at an April 21 event in Caroline.
Women of the Farm, which is in its third year, will feature presentations by Leona Staples, co-owner of The Jungle Farm market garden near Innisfail; Tamara Taylor, co-owner of Ravenwood Farm Fresh Meats at Caroline; and Jill Burkhardt, a cow-calf producer form Drayton Valley. The three women will share their farm business experiences.
Now in its 11th year, Cows and Creeks and Now Communities Too will bring a pair of speakers from Clear Water Landcare (formerly the Rocky Riparian Group).
Mike Sullivan, a biologist with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, will describe how human activity affects watersheds. And Kim Nielsen, agricultural service manager with Clearwater County, will describe his experiences during a recent secondment to Landcare Agriculture Ltd. in Australia.
Attendees can sit in on either of the seminars, which will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
A “rural-friendly” trade show called Kickin the Tires & Shootin the Breeze is being organized as part of the event. It will run from noon to 3:30 p.m., with the Kurt Browning Complex in Caroline the venue.
The cost to attend either of the seminars is $15, which includes lunch and supper. Preregistration is required, which can be done through Clearwater County Agricultural Services by calling 403-845-4444 or emailing goudie@county.clearwater.ab.ca.
There will be no charge to attend the trade show.
Investment firm sues photographer Leibovitz
NEW YORK — Annie Leibovitz is facing new accusations of not paying her bills less than a month after she struck a deal that was supposed to have resolved her financial problems.
Investment firm Brunswick Capital Partners LP sued the celebrity photographer Friday in a Manhattan court.
It says Leibovitz owes more than $800,000 in fees for its help arranging her recent financing agreement with another firm, Colony Capital LLC.
